Last week IBM launched the ‘Expert Integrated Systems’ or PureSystem. Call it what you will, it is probably the most significant IBM hardware announcement in years. And I deliberately make a point about the ‘hardware’ part of that comment, as IBM are very keen that this launch is seen as a collaborative launch, driven by the software group and jointly heralded. Nonetheless, at the core of the solution is a new hardware chassis, and new way of thinking from IBM.
The departure from selling disparate products that require significant configuration and separate management tools is in step with other vendors and what clients require. Importantly, by embracing the POWER platform and the AIX/iOS/Linux world as well as the Wintel, the PureSystem is a far more comprehensive proposition than any other solution on the market.
Nonetheless, for IBM to fulfil the optimism of helping “organizations implement and manage new IT capabilities much more efficiently than was previously possible achieving breakthrough results” – it will be the Application Cloud (PureApplication) that is of vital importance. For me, the IBM Application Cloud is the most intriguing and compelling aspect of the PureSystem. It allows users to download applications, and importantly a metadata ‘configuration’, which combined can significantly reduce the configuration/deployment cycle.
Application clouds are not a new concept. After all, Apple’s App Store has been an amazing success. For the IBM cloud to be a similar success it will require the majority of the major software vendors to embrace the concept – and it certainly seems that is happening already judging by the 100’s who have joined pre-launch.
Will a metadata file greatly reduce the deployment cycle in most instances? In a complex software deployment, how much time does it take to install and configure the Application to work with your hardware environment, versus customising the Application to meet your business needs thereafter? I guess it is too early to tell.
However, one thing is for sure, IBM are very confident in the new product and new direction. It is stated as having a certain roadmap for the next ten years and therefore it is the future or mid-range computing for IBM. That being the case, if you are currently considering an IBM Intel or POWER investment, you should evaluate the PureSystem.
