Many of today’s organisations are increasingly moving towards dynamic infrastructures, with multiple vendor technologies and protocols in use on their LANs and SANs. This is causing a clear need to reduce complexity in the I.T. environment. How is this achieved?

There are many answers to that question but one that stands out is IBM’s latest offering of flexible Cisco switches supporting Fibre Channel and converged enhanced Ethernet and Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE). Scaleable and with a high level of availability, the Cisco Nexus 5000 Series from IBM is fast becoming the enterprise-class converged switch of choice.

Nexus switches come in two main types, the 5010 with up to 28 ports, 20 fixed 10GbE and FCoE ports and 8 optional FC ports.

The 5020 comes with up to 56 ports, 40 fixed 10GbE and FCoE ports and 16 optional FC ports.

Both versions of this versatile switching solution offer enterprise class availability with redundant power, redundant fan modules and hot swappable and field replaceable expansion modules. Personally, I know of a few companies who have benefited already from preserving existing Fibre Channel management tools and investment in staff training. Another big saving I have seen companies make is in the reduced need for server adapters, cabling and upstream switches.

It will be interesting to see how the Nexus helps reduce cost and complexity in all kinds of I.T. environments as the uptake of this high performing switch undoubtedly increases.
