The two c’s… complexity and cost are often common gripes associated to deploying a virtual desktop (VDI) environment. IBM hope to address both of these issues with the release of its virtual desktop solution, launched in India recently.
Focusing on flexibility and portability, virtual desktop version 2.2 will provide anytime, anywhere access to personal desktops from mobile devices, including tablets, net books and laptops. Features included allow faster deployment of new applications, automatic software updates whilst centralizing the management of Linux and windows desktops.
The new desktop will reduce outright costs by 20-30% and is being trialled in 8 cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Pune and Hyderabad.
VDI is a hot topic at the moment; partners have a variety of solutions available to them so I’ll be interested to see what the uptake is like when it hits the UK later this year.
