I don’t know if you’ve seen them, but HP have combined their market leading printer services with their fantastic TouchSmart technology to bring self service kiosks into UK supermarkets.

At the moment I’ve only seen a few of them, all self service photo printing units that allow you to throw in a USB, flash, wireless, DVD/CD or card based storage device and then select, edit, enhance and print your photos onto premium photo quality cards. It only worked out to about £0.25 per photo and was all very slick as these things go.

HP have also announced that they are to expand the range of ePOS devices with both a “high-performance point-of-sale (POS) solution that combines enhanced processing and functionality to meet the needs of even the most demanding retail environments” and an additional range of self service devices that utilise a 23″ or 42″ HD TouchSmart display and “featuring Virtual Sales Assistant software, provide customers with an easy-to-use, interactive platform that offers information and personal assistance”.

It’ll be interesting to see if HP can make an impact on the ePOS market as it’s not an area they’ve ever been focussed on.
