There has been much debate about the pros and cons of Flash memory and Flash Storage Systems.

Many are misconstrued as to whether Flash is Cache or Memory – So, what is Flash? It is in actual fact both Cache and Storage – simply speaking it holds data and stores it in its memory, allowing speed, efficiency as well as security and reliability.

Some experts suggest that a smaller form factor make it more difficult for Flash to work well for enterprise storage, that it was designed for the asymmetrical usage of mobile devices and not for the repetitive nature of the enterprise datacentre. It is thought that more background work is needed to keep the data clean and that higher density will eventually trade-off performance and reliability. Flash has also been considered a high cost investment that some mid-market businesses are reluctant to make. …

However, it cannot be stressed enough that if Flash is deployed intelligently within a Storage environment, there is a substantial cost saving to be had for your overall infrastructure costs.  Storage tiering (such as IBM’s Easy Tier system within the V7000) has made it easier to integrate Flash where it is needed most. However, the challenge often lies in identifying this area through full assessment and research….

Applied Technologies can assess where your requirement for Flash lies, be it via Flash-based SSD for your critical data in the top tier or the addition of single Flash memory cards where it is needed, careful architectural design and implementation can make all the difference to the performance and cost efficiency of your infrastructure.

Applied Technologies has recently worked with one of the Insurance industry leaders to integrate Flash into their infrastructure. Their existing V7000 storage system deployed by Applied Technologies in 2012, required further expansion. Rather than increasing the number of spinning disks and simply creating a larger system, Applied Technology suggested a combination of Flash Systems alongside some higher capacity drives. This not only reduced footprint and energy consumption of the storage subsystem but allowed key server applications to reach higher levels of utilisation, speeding up workloads, removing application bottlenecks and allowing the client to reconsider the application Core allocation and associated licensing costs.

Talk to one of your experts today to discover why Flash Deployment could be the solution your growing data challenges and save you money year on year.
