The IBM Passport Advantage renewal process has often amused me. Clients often just pay it without reviewing its details however it is important to determine whether products can be removed or whether due to hardware changes during the PA year that there is a license shortfall.
The IBM License Metric Tool has always been available as a free of charge tool to ensure compliance relating to sub-capacity usage of PA software but often the first time the product is used is when an IBM contracted Software Auditor knocks on the door.
Having been involved in a number of software audits, they are not fun. The auditors often do not understand the POWER platform; the use of Capacity on Demand or in fact inactive or partitioned processors. With this lack of knowledge, they often determine that there is a license shortfall, sometimes significant, when often there is not.
The IBM License Metric Tool can be used on a regular basis to manage the license changes within an Enterprise avoiding the big annual surprise or the risk of an IBM software audit exposing compliance issues.
The output of the tool will then enable you to compare the licenses you have against the license usage.
