More than 70 million tablet PC’s like the Apple iPad will be sold throughout 2011 so it was no surprise to see HP chopping over a billion dollars off its annual sales forecast off the back of a 23% fall in PC sales.

With Apple selling a staggering 4.69 million iPads last quarter and 20 million in total since its April 2010 release  Apple is leaving behind their competitors with the likes of RIM, Motorola and Samsung struggling to gain wide uptake with their own versions.

The lack of a viable competitor to the Apple crown has had knock-on effects throughout the PC industry with sales of Microsoft windows falling by 4.4% and Intel, the supplier of processors to 80% of the world’s personal computers, has also only reported growth figures in the emerging markets and corporate sales.

With the release of the HP Touchpad this coming summer hopefully this will all be good news for fans of technology putting the impetus on manufacturers to step up to mark.  I’d like to see Intel developing processors that are considered more appealing for use with smart phones and tablets.
