Details have emerged that Red Hat and IBM have been working together to create an open source virtualisation solution using Kernel based virtual machine technology (KVM)

KVM is a virtual machine implementation which relies on using the the operating systems Kernel. KVM often gives greater performance than using virtual machine solutions which rely heavily on the user space drivers.

I know from experience that many partners can often feel caged in by committing soley to a single, proprietary virtualisation solution. Companies taking their first steps into the realms of virtualisation can often find it even more daunting.

From the information that I’ve digested so far, alot of the testing taking place has combined IBM x86 based hardware and Red Hat enterprise virtualisation, with heavy focus being put on datacentre automation and virtual storage.

A solution that would allow businesses to create multiple linux and windows environments on the same server without a proprietary solution would no doubt lower expenses, I’ll certainly be interested to see the results.
