Applied Technologies equips ISP for future growth
A large international ISV approached Applied to structure a storage solution that would meet long term growth plans, both in terms of size and performance – and a platform that would be easy to manage at scale. Applied has deployed a 150tb XIV storage solution into the client in 2014 – delivering linear IOPS to support their large IBM Flex systems, and AIX enviroments. The client wanted to take advatange of compression, Flash and tiering to develop a virtualised storage infrastructure based on IBM VSC technology.
Applied chose to deploy a 20 TB Flash subsystem as the heart of the performance layer. A pair of IBM SVC engines, with IBM VSC code, managed the XIV and Flash, and incorporated older legacy HP storage as a third tier.
By utilising the compression feature in the VSC, the client was able to present nearly 80tb of Flash storage as the high performance layer. The cost per TB, with the energy savings and space saving in the DC, was cost competitive with enterprise class spinning disk, yet delivered substantial performance benefits.
Latterly, a second set SVC’s have been installed at the DR site, managing the site to site replication.
The VSC layer provides a single interface to manage the storage, the compression, the two sites and the replication, freeing up resources for other projects.
The client will gladly speak to selected prospects about the improved performance and managements gains.
